House Passes on Slot Machine Bill
Massachusetts Racetrack owners are fighting back tears as State House
Speaker Salvatore F. DiMasi suggested that the House would most likely nix
legislation in favor of placing thousands of slot machines in the state’s
failing racetracks in order to boost revenues. The supporters of the bill
say that such a dismissal would be sacrificing over 4,000 jobs that would be
save by the installation of slot machines at the tracks. The supporters of
said bill are surely, equally choked up over the loss of quite a bit of
money that had been use to woo legislators in order for a swift approval in
the house. The main reason for the decline in revenues at the states race
tracks is cited to be the tough competition among newer Connecticut casinos
and snazzy slot machines in Rhode Island and Maine.
DiMasi wouldn’t commit to how he was going to vote for the controversial
slot machine bill, but did insinuate that the chances were pretty slim that
the house would be dealing with the particular topic during this term. At
this time it appears the health coverage of 500,000 uninsured residents is
taking priority over the fate of slot machines as DiMasi clearly states, ''I
think we need to concentrate on health care right now," he added. ''That's
my focus. I want to get health care before the deadline. We have $389
million in jeopardy. I don't want any distractions."
The interesting flip of faith in Senate President Robert E. Travaglini,
who was so gung ho about the slot machines bill that he enthusiastically
cheered it though a 29 to 6 vote, was all of the sudden resigned to its
failure at the turn of a dime. The senator’s district will be particularly
effected since it is home to the Wonderland Greyhound Park in Revere which
is in severe need to a face lift and an image makeover. The slot machines
bill would certainly seem to be the answer to their budget issues given it
is slated to bring in approximately $350 million in taxes for the use of the
state, which would take a bit of the bitter taste in the states mouth left
over from the over $700 million dollars that are spent by its residents at
gambling establishments outside of the state. |
