Ohio Struggles with Slot Decision

As always the battle over to allow slot machines in an area brings up the same differences of opinion. “Slot machines will invigorate our economy, create jobs, and raise money for social causes.” And the contrast being, “ Slot machines are no way to raise tax dollar because the money is still being taken in large sums from the people themselves, and the negative social effects are far to great to risk the nominal positives.”

Well, these two views are both being expressed loud and clear in the state of Ohio after an initiative was created to pursue building a hotel/casino in one of the state largest cities, Cincinnati. This isn’t the first time certain members of the state have attempted to bring slot machines to the area. There were two other attempts that ended with definitive failures in the house.

Many reps still hold true to the feeling that slot machine gambling is the wrong alternative to turn to in order to bring in more tax dollars for the state, “It doesn’t help communities because it is counterproductive. It takes from Peter to pay Paul.” While other argue that the decision to deny slot machines to the state is keeping jobs from developing where they could be. This stems from the belief that slot machines in Virginia have been coaxing away Ohio business that could be saved if slot machines were allowed.
