Monkey Slots - D.C.'s Eighth Ward Won't Agree to Slots
Washington D.C.'s consideration of putting slot machines in the districts
poorest neighborhood has been met by an emphatic negative response that
seems to reveal that the board of elections and ethics was pretty out of
sink with its constituents after voting to place the slot machine initiative
on the coming November ballot. But despite certain opinions that the slot
machines would bring in much needed money for the community, other just see
them as tools in their destruction, “We don’t need casinos here. There’s
already enough crime and problems here. Why don’t they make an initiative to
clean up this part of town? We’re against this. They don’t ask the young
what they want but I’m letting them know.”
For residents of the neighborhood in question the negative aspect of the
slot machines seem the most obvious and prevalent result if they were
installed, so the almost sly way that the state is trying to slip the
initiative in the upcoming ballot is an underhanded way to exploit the
already ailing community and give a quick fix which would only cause more
problems in the end. “They want to sneak this on the ballot and we’re going
to fight this, These slot machines would have a devastating affect on an
already devastated community.”
The district defends their choice by saying that the slot machines would
give money to the areas schools and elderly, but more people in the research
world are confirming the residents fears that in low income areas the
presence of gambling will inherently increase certain crimes, a crime
residents say is the last thing anyone needs in the area, "The store where
they want to place these things needs to be closed anyway. You can’t get in
without turning sideways and you can’t get out without turning again because
every child in the area is standing in front of the store. The place is
dirty and filthy. Slot machines will just make it worse.” |
